This is done to protect the rights, privileges and benefits of those who choose to be members in good standing. But that’s not really true, because every Elks Lodge is also a private club and like any other private club access is restricted to members only. One may feel that these rules are overly punitive and perhaps not in keeping with some of our beloved Principles. You may not know this, but former members that have been dropped from the membership rolls cannot enter any Elks Lodge for any reason, not even as the guest of a member in good standing! Every year, some members of our Lodge will surrender their Elks privileges as a result of non-payment of dues, which is a terrible loss for them and the Lodge too. Lodge guests are always welcome, but they may only enter the Lodge when accompanied by a member. None of these benefits are available to the public or to former members who have surrendered their privileges. As you know, it impossible to put a price on the camaraderie of fellow members. Divide the cost of the dues, $78 by the number of days were are open which is 362, the cost of membership is just 22 cents per day! This is a bargain by anybody’s standard. This is just a portion of what your membership dues pay for. This is not to mention Wings and Things on Monday Nights, and our very popular steak at the Bar on Tuesday Nights. For instance, our members can enjoy a delicious dinner at the Lodge on Friday nights in a beautiful dining room at prices that are better than area restaurants. Membership at Elk Creek Ranch is about family traditions, building memories and creating a legacy for generations to come.Members of the Elks enjoy privileges that are unavailable to the public and those that have let their membership lapse. In doing so, they pass on a love of the outdoors from one generation to the next, as well an ethos of conservation and protection of the ranch’s pristine resources. Elk Creek Ranch is a gathering place where like-minded recreational and outdoor enthusiasts come to hunt, fish, and enjoy the tremendous resources the ranch has to offer. In other words, they go from quiet to loud to quiet to loud, while relaxing noises maintain a fairly steady noise level. Why do alarms wake you up when other sounds don’t?Īlarm clocks, phones, or other noises that wake you up don’t have the consistent levels that nature sounds or white noise have. White noise machines are fine as long as the noise is lower than 60 decibels, they aren’t placed right near the crib, and you don’t run them constantly. Some people like to play white noise machines to help their babies sleep, but other people are concerned that they could be too loud. It also helps if the song is familiar to you, because it will fade into the background better. Ideally, you want to listen to a slower song – around 60 to 80 beats per minute – like easy-listening jazz. They’re non-threatening, steady noises that can mask other, disruptive background sounds. Jet engines, trains, and other machines are far from natural, but their sounds work on your brain the same way nature sounds do. Why does the sound of jet engines help me sleep? Nature sounds and other background noises also help mask sounds that might keep you awake, like traffic or someone moving around in the apartment above you. This lowers your stress level and helps you become more relaxed for sleep. Your brain interprets them as non-threatening noises, which helps reduce your fight-or-flight response. Natural sounds relax you because they are constant noises of a pleasant pitch. If you go into the app store on your phone, you can find any number of nature sound apps that are supposed to help you sleep. You’re tired of waking up after only a few hours’ sleep, so one of your friends recommends listening to some soft music or nature sounds. “Why Do Babies Wake Up At Night?”, Seattle Children’s Hospital, 2013.You toss and turn at night, but a full evening of sleep eludes you.Talbert, “White Noise and Sleep Induction”, National Center for Biotechnology Information, 1990. “Does Music Really Make Us Happy? If you are a macOS user who needs access to other OSs, you should try Parallels Desktop for Mac. It is easy to use, integrates well with macOS, and has many customizable features. Parallels Desktop for Mac is an excellent solution for home or business users who prefer macOS and need to perform tasks in other OSs, such as Windows or Linux. Also, Parallels Desktop for Mac can connect to your Xbox or PlayStation DualShock Bluetooth controller providing an enhanced gaming experience. For example, it enables you to archive files, record your screen, take screenshots, record audio, convert video, turn off wireless communication in Airplane mode, set notification alarms and timers, make GIFs, enter Presentation mode, and switch your VM's resolution with just a few clicks. In addition, the included Parallels Toolbox simplifies many simple OS-based tasks. The software also allows users to save a snapshot of their VM's current state to use as a backup or branch if needed. The program enables users to easily pause, suspend, shut down, and restart VMs, and manage the disk space consumed by the VMs. In addition, Parallels Desktop for Mac on M1 Macs can run Windows 11, macOS Monterrey (12) and Ventura (13), Ubuntu Linux, Fedora Workstation, Debian GNU/Linux, and Kali Linux.Īfter a user creates and launches their first VM, they can access Parallels Desktop for Mac's VM controls and toolkit. It can also run macOS versions from Monterey (12) to Lion (10.7), as well as Ubuntu Linux, Fedora Linux, CentOS Linux SUSE, Red Hat, Debian, Fedora Core, Mandriva, FreeBSD, Debian GNU/Linux, Kali, Mint Linux, Solaris, OpenBSD, FreeBSD, ReactOS, and Android. Parallels Desktop for Mac on Intel-based Macs allows users to run over 60 different OSs, including Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 8, 7, Vista, XP, and 2000. In addition, those who want to work across multiple OSs simultaneously can run Parallels Desktop for Mac in a windowed or side-by-side mode, while those who wish to immerse themselves in Windows or another OS can run Parallels Desktop for Mac in full-screen mode. For example, users can access their macOS files within Parallels Desktop for Mac VMs, copy and paste text across OSs, and connect USB devices, such as flash drives, printers, and mobile devices, to either macOS or a VM (and reassign devices as needed). With Parallels Desktop for Mac, users can create and run Windows, Linux, and additional macOS VMs, each integrated with the user's original instance of macOS. Parallels Desktop for Mac runs as an application within macOS and functions as a virtual machine (VM). The software is available in Standard, Pro, and Business editions. Additionally, the software lets users seamlessly run non-macOS programs, switch between and customize OSs, and simplify tasks with its Toolbox. Parallels Desktop for Mac is an operating system virtualization application that allows Intel- and M1-based Mac users to run Windows and other operating systems (OSs). Apple includes drivers for components within your Mac that should automatically install once Windows has booted for the first time.Screenshot of Parallels Desktop for Mac 18 To use Windows you'll need to reboot your computer, hold the Option key, then select Windows from the list of bootable volumes. On older machines (a category that Intel Mac models now fall into), this can result in a moderate performance penalty which isn't present on a native install.Īs noted, you can only do this using a Mac with an Intel CPU. Parallels Desktop 18 for Mac Standard Edition Full support for Apple's ProMotion display with automatic refresh rate changes and increased Apple M1 Ultra performance, allowing users to assign. Running Windows in a VM means that you have to share resources with macOS. Installing Windows natively allows you to run Microsoft's operating system at full speed. What You Need to Know About Installing Windows Natively on a Mac Apple no longer manufactures Intel-based machines, so you're limited to buying a used Mac if you're specifically looking for a computer that can do this. If you have an older Mac with an Intel chip you can install Windows natively on your computer, effectively turning your Mac into a standard Windows PC. Install Windows on Your Intel Mac with Boot Camp Thus, the length of the air column is equal to one-fourth of the wavelength for the first harmonic. A careful analysis of the diagram above shows that a node and an adjacent antinode are positioned at the two ends of the air column. Since nodes always lie midway in between the antinodes, the distance between an antinode and a node must be equivalent to one-fourth of a wavelength. The distance between adjacent antinodes on a standing wave pattern is equivalent to one-half of a wavelength. For this reason, the standing wave pattern for the fundamental frequency (or first harmonic) for a closed-end air column looks like the diagram below. If this principle is applied to closed-end air columns, then the pattern for the fundamental frequency (the lowest frequency and longest wavelength pattern) will have a node at the closed end and an antinode at the open end. So the basis for drawing the standing wave patterns for air columns is that vibrational antinodes will be present at any open end and vibrational nodes will be present at any closed end. And as such, the standing wave patterns will depict vibrational antinodes at the open ends of air columns. Conversely, air is free to undergo its back-and-forth longitudinal vibration at the open end of an air column. Air at the closed end of an air column is still. That is, at the closed end of an air column, air is not free to undergo movement and thus is forced into assuming the nodal positions of the standing wave pattern. In the case of air columns, a closed end in a column of air is analogous to the fixed end on a vibrating string. Such patterns show nodes - points of no displacement or movement - at the two fixed ends of the string. In the case of stringed instruments (discussed earlier), standing wave patterns were drawn to depict the amount of movement of the string at various locations along its length. In Lesson 4 of Unit 10, a standing wave pattern was defined as a vibrational pattern created within a medium when the vibrational frequency of the source causes reflected waves from one end of the medium to interfere with incident waves from the source in such a manner that specific points along the medium appear to be standing still. Each harmonic is associated with a standing wave pattern. These natural frequencies are known as the harmonics of the instrument. As we will see the presence of the closed end on such an air column will affect the actual frequencies that the instrument can produce.Īs has already been mentioned, a musical instrument has a set of natural frequencies at which it vibrates at when a disturbance is introduced into it. Some instruments that operate as open-end air columns can be transformed into closed-end air columns by covering the end opposite the mouthpiece with a mute. Some pipe organs and the air column within the bottle of a pop-bottle orchestra are examples of closed-end instruments. An instrument consisting of a closed-end column typically contains a metal tube in which one of the ends is covered and not open to the surrounding air. This part of Lesson 5 will use similar principles to develop the standing wave patterns and associated mathematics for closed-end air column. The mathematics of the harmonic frequencies associated with such standing wave patterns were developed. In the previous part of Lesson 5, the formation of a standing wave patterns in an open-end instrument was discussed. In North Carolina, they typically eat anchovies, but bluefish are known to take chunks out of many other fish. He now studies climate and migration patterns of marine species, including bluefish, as a postdoctoral researcher at Rutgers University. “Their teeth are similar to a great white shark’s, meant for grabbing and ripping relatively large prey in half,” Morley notes. In fact, these voracious feeders “eat whatever is most abundant,” explains James Morley, whose master’s and doctoral research at North Carolina State University focused on the fish. They eat other fish, rather than dining on zooplankton or phytoplankton. Off the North Carolina coast, they can be found in all seasons.īlues are migratory apex predators. They swim along the Eastern Seaboard from Maine to Florida. Many people have been coming to experience the Hatteras Fish Fry for over 30 years.” BLUE BIOLOGYīluefish travel in large groups, or schools. It’s a must-do event for people passing through on vacation. Proceeds from the fish fry support community projects, such as the Hatteras Village Civic Association, the volunteer fire company’s Ladies Auxiliary, local churches and the island food pantry. We support commercial fishermen by buying bluefish from them, and then we donate all our profits to charitable organizations in our community,” she adds. The more money we can make, the more the community benefits. “Because bluefish are so readily available in the summer months, it makes them an economical choice for us. Why feature bluefish? They’re a part of local culture - and abundant off the North Carolina coast - notes Mary Ellon Ballance, a fish-fry organizer. The Hatteras Fish Fry is a popular local tradition that draws crowds eager to taste the freshly caught fish. The maps from the next few iterations of CoD are a much more exciting affair. It feels bland in comparison to the later efforts, which are more akin to full blown campaign maps, with their sprawling pathways and multi-tiered layout. The repetitive nature of the incessant wave of zombies becomes increasingly apparent on the original World at War maps and it won’t be long before you will find yourself wanting something bigger. It may be a nice trip down memory lane for some though, as the maps have all received a graphical overhaul and a few rounds of the original map can be fun – but it’s short lived. Treyarch has spiced things up by adding in the Gobblegums of Black Ops III, but it does little to really make the map interesting beyond a dozen waves or so. Its small, has only two floors, and has no power switches or traps to turn on. Kicking off with the map that started it all back in 2008, Nacht Der Untoten can almost be considered a tutorial of sorts and it’s a great place to start if you’re new to the zombies game mode. It is often frantic, and for newcomers it will be quite an exhilarating experience getting to know the areas. These points can then be used to purchase better weapons, open routes to new areas, operate traps and purchase weapon or personal upgrades. You earn points by landing shots, surviving a wave and barricading entry points. If you have never played any of Call of Duty’s zombie maps before then the premise is simple: you must survive never ending waves of progressively harder zombies. It’s a clever move, as Zombies has long been a selling point for CoD and it only seems natural that they would try and release a sort of compendium a greatest hits of the series high points and humble beginnings, and humble they were. Call of Duty Zombies Chronicles is the latest effort by developer Treyarch to inject life into the bloated corpse that is the Call of Duty zombie series. Yes, the latest trend of re-releasing past glories shows no sign of abating. Your fears fade, your heart rate slows, it’s just another re-master pushing its way through to release. It’s not clear how much the funding is intended to cover legal fees vs. Hogan, whose real name is Terry Gene Bollea, has filed a $100 million privacy lawsuit against Gawker over a sex tape that the company’s flagship gossip site published in 2012. Gawker declined to comment further, but the fundraising process has “reached an advanced stage,” according to The Wall Street Journal. Until now, Gawker Media has been funding the Hulk Hogan legal expenses from general revenues and given the expenses of continuing to defend our First Amendment rights, the management of Gawker Media has concluded that additional financing should be locked in before the trial begins. Gawker Media is the most heavily trafficked digital media company that has not raised institutional funding and continues to grow at double-digit rates, with significant untapped opportunity across its seven core brands. With the Hulk Hogan trial beginning in early March, Gawker Media is fortifying its finances to ensure full resources are in place for the continued cost of litigation. When we reached out to Gawker founder Nick Denton (pictured at left in the photo above) the company sent us this statement: We’ve confirmed the news with a source of our own, but it turns out we didn’t need to. The Thiel-backed litigation included Hulk Hogan’s invasion-of-privacy lawsuit against Gawker over a video the site posted showing the wrestler having sex with his ex-friend’s wife a jury awarded Hogan $140 million in damages in the case.Gawker Media is raising outside funding, and for a specific purpose - it says it’s getting ready for its legal battle with Hulk Hogan.Īs first reported in the International Business Times, the company has called for an “extraordinary general meeting” of shareholders on Thursday, where it will discuss changing its capital structure to accommodate new financing. On its own site, BDG describes Gawker like this: “We are irreverent, iconoclastic, new, and strange, and we seek to raise questions about the structure of the world around us. “Today’s latest round of layoffs, and the closure of Gawker, came after more than two years of attempting to bargain a first contract with BDG, and on the heels of more recent bargaining dates being outright canceled by the company,” WGAE said in a statement, adding that it will “continue to press for a contract that both protects our workers’ rights and guarantees a severance that acknowledges their labor and the worth they create for their company.”īDG had intended to relaunch in 2019 but Goldberg suspended those plans and laid off the staff he had hired after reported clashes among employees. The Writers Guild of America, East (WGAE) said it was “appalled by BDG’s decision to lay off nearly 40 of our unit members.” The union noted that it’s the third round of layoffs at BDG over the last six months, which have “effectively led to halving the original unit from 200 workers to just above 100 workers.” It’s a business decision, and one that, reluctantly, must be made.”Ī BDG spokesperson declined to provide further info, including how many employees will be losing their jobs because of the move.Īmong the last stories published on Gawker were “Andrea Riseborough Guilty of Being a Good Actor With Friends Who Appreciate Her” “Robert Zemeckis: I Love Using the Computer to Make Tom Hanks Look Insane” “Why Is Taylor Swift Always Showing Feet?” “The Best and Worst Media TikTok Accounts” and “Surprising No One, George Santos Is a Disney Adult.” But in this new reality, we have to prioritize our better-monetized sites. In a memo sent to company staffers Wednesday, Goldberg wrote, “Gawker published a lot of brilliant pieces in these nearly two years. I had an absolute blast, and I love you.” “Can’t say enough about how proud I am of the site and all the brilliant people who worked to create it, and what a staggering shame this is. “Well, after an incredible 1.5 years, BDG has decided it is done with Gawker 2.0,” she tweeted.
